About the work.

Agua de la Alameda Acrylic on wood · 60 × 120 cm What you see in El Capricho is only the surface. Beneath the French parterre, the Italian giardino and the English landscape laid out for the Duchess of Osuna, water still moves on its own terms. Springs, wells, old viajes de agua and the navigable ría of the Alameda de Osuna cross, swell and thin out under the soil. This painting is not a view of the garden. It is a section through that hidden current. A pale, almost calcareous ground holds a network of grey-blue lines. They behave at once like veins, roots and canals. Some thicken into nodes; others fall in thin vertical drips, as if pressure had found a crack. Oval masses hang in the upper register like stones or pockets of retained water. At the right edge a darker body interrupts the flow, an obstruction in the substratum rather than a figure. Nothing of temple, bridge or lake is named. What remains is movement: the slow intelligence of water seeking a way through. The long wooden panel is used as a geological cut. Acrylic is allowed to veil, reserve and run, so the surface keeps the memory of filtration. Horizontal, quiet, and built for looking slowly. Unique work.
